WESTLEY, STANISLAUS COUNTY — OCTOBER 18, 2026. Drivers traveling through California’s Central Valley on Interstate 5 should not count on the Westley Safety Roadside Rest Areas for a break this fall. A Caltrans District 10 traffic advisory published October 9 says both the northbound and southbound Westley facilities remain fully closed for construction through fall 2026, with an additional southbound auxiliary-lane restriction associated with the work.

Which rest stops are affected?

The notice refers specifically to the Westley Safety Roadside Rest Areas on northbound and southbound I-5. This is not a statewide closure of rest areas, and it does not mean that every roadside facility on I-5 is unavailable. However, people approaching Westley from either direction should check an alternative stopping location before they get close to the exits.

Is there an exact reopening date?

Not in the October 9 Caltrans advisory. The agency says construction will continue through fall 2026 without specifying a confirmed reopening day. Drivers should not rely on an unofficial date circulating on social media. Caltrans may extend or revise the schedule depending on materials, weather and construction conditions.

Why road travelers should plan

Long-distance drivers, truckers and families traveling between Northern and Southern California rely on I-5 for lengthy stretches without urban services. A closed rest area can matter for restroom access, fatigue management and planned stops, particularly for drivers who need an accessible facility. Commercial truck drivers also have separate hours-of-service rules and should not assume a road closure creates an exemption.

How to plan a safer trip

  1. Check conditions before leaving: Consult Caltrans QuickMap for road closures, incidents and advisories.
  2. Choose an alternate stopping point: Identify a verified open rest area or fuel and food stop along your actual direction of travel, without making an unsafe freeway maneuver.
  3. Build in a fatigue break: Do not postpone a needed break because the intended rest area is closed. Use a lawful, safe alternative.
  4. Follow signs: Construction may involve the rest-area access road or auxiliary lanes; avoid shoulder stops or entering a barricaded ramp.
  5. Recheck the opening: Use Caltrans updates rather than a listing that might be stale.

What other work was listed in Stanislaus County?

The same October 9 District 10 advisory also outlined shorter construction periods on State Routes 4, 99 and 132. Those short-term dates are separate from the longer Westley closure. Notably, Caltrans listed a westbound turn-lane restriction on SR-132 at Frazine Road in Empire extending toward November 20; this does not affect the I-5 rest-area reopening timeline.
