CALIFORNIA58 | TRAVEL PLANNING & CONSUMER MONEY | OCTOBER 19, 2026. A cheap daily rental-car rate can become expensive after airport charges, taxes, insurance, an additional driver, parking and a required deposit. Travelers arriving in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco also face very different ways to reach their rental counters. Our 2026 guide compares the official airport instructions and the questions renters should answer before paying.

The quickest practical advice: Compare the total reservation price, not the advertised rate per day; confirm the pickup location and agency opening hours; and ask your own insurer and credit-card issuer what rental-car coverage, if any, applies.

LAX: Know whether your company is at the Rental Car Center

Los Angeles International Airport’s ground-transportation page says that, as of March 11, 2026, airport-serving car rental offices operate either from the LAX Rental Car Center (RCC), 5251 West 98th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90045, or off-airport property. For rental companies using the RCC, official airport instructions direct arriving passengers to the purple Rental Car Shuttles sign on the Lower/Arrivals level outside baggage claim. Those companies operate authorized courtesy shuttles. Off-airport renters should verify the specific operator’s current address and pickup instructions, rather than assume every company is located at the center.

Check the LAX official ground-transportation guide on the day you arrive. If a travel site lists a bargain office away from the airport, account for the extra transfer time and the costs of reaching that office.

San Diego SAN: One main airport Rental Car Center and a free shuttle

The official San Diego International Airport Rental Car Center page places airport rental pickups and drop-offs at 3355 Admiral Boland Way, San Diego, CA 92101. Free shuttle buses connect the terminals and the Rental Car Center 24 hours a day, though each rental company’s counter and after-hours return procedures may differ. Follow the airport’s ground-transportation signs and verify which shuttle stop serves your terminal.

A late flight landing does not necessarily mean your reservation desk will be open when you reach it. Confirm your flight number is attached to the booking where supported, the late-arrival policy, and the location and procedures for overnight returns.

SFO: AirTrain Blue Line takes travelers to the rental counters

At San Francisco International Airport, the official rental-car guide sends passengers to the Rental Car Center at 780 North McDonnell Road, San Francisco, CA 94128, via AirTrain’s Blue Line. The airport notes that the AirTrain operates around the clock, but individual agency desks have different operating hours. The airport also advises that certain off-airport rental agencies are reached from shuttle stops at the center rather than directly from the terminals.

Terminal construction and nighttime AirTrain maintenance can affect routing. Travelers at SFO should check the airport’s updated AirTrain instructions rather than use an outdated terminal map.

Seven costs that can change the deal

  1. Base rate versus total: Determine whether the quote includes airport concession charges, taxes and location-specific facility fees.
  2. Insurance and waivers: Ask about liability coverage, collision or loss damage waivers, deductibles, exclusions and the effect of unauthorized drivers.
  3. Security deposit: Ask how much is authorized on your card and how long an unused hold may take to release.
  4. Young or additional drivers: Review the specific company rules, even when another household member has a valid license.
  5. Fuel and charging: Compare full-to-full fuel policies and any electric-vehicle return charge levels or recharging fees.
  6. One-way returns: A rental collected at LAX and returned at SAN or SFO may cost more than a round trip.
  7. Parking and tolls: Hotels, downtown attractions, bridge crossings and airport return lanes can add charges even when your rental contract itself is inexpensive.

California insurance rules: purchase at the rental counter isn’t always necessary

The California Department of Insurance requires rental-car insurance sellers to disclose, among other things, that buying their offered insurance is not required and may duplicate the renter’s other coverage. This does not mean driving without legally required financial responsibility is allowed; it means you should distinguish optional insurance products offered at a counter from the coverage you actually need.

The department’s consumer alert stresses that some personal insurance policies only cover a rental as a temporary replacement vehicle, and credit-card benefits can differ between traditional rentals and peer-to-peer services. Before declining or buying coverage, call your insurer and card provider with the exact rental circumstances, dates, location and vehicle type.

Should you rent at the airport or downtown?

If your destination is a dense city neighborhood where parking is expensive and transit is practical, it may be cheaper to use rail or a rideshare for your first days and rent only when heading out of town. By contrast, travelers exploring rural counties, national parks, the Eastern Sierra or smaller desert towns may need a car for most of the itinerary.

Compare both options using the whole journey: airport transfer + rental + parking + fuel + tolls + drop-off versus transit/rideshare + later off-airport rental. A seemingly lower daily rate can be a worse deal once lost vacation time and fees are counted.

How to organize a California road trip after landing

Browse California58’s 58-county visitor guides and road conditions section, particularly before a mountain or desert drive. Our affiliated OptionTrip travel project offers broader itinerary-planning tools; some services on that platform may also use partner links. Travelers planning the coast can compare our San Diego attraction-pass guide or San Francisco passes and attractions to decide where a rental vehicle is useful—and where it may be unnecessary.

Final checklist before confirming a reservation

Save a written copy of the pickup office address, terminal-to-counter directions, hours, total price, cancellation policy, security deposit, included insurance details, toll policy, fuel/charge return rules, authorized drivers and return location. Compare at least two offers based on the same dates, vehicle class and insurance assumptions.
