CALIFORNIA58 RELOCATION GUIDE | Updated October 26, 2026. A weekend getaway is a poor substitute for testing the ordinary demands of living in a California community. Before a long-term lease or a home purchase, spend time in the area on weekdays, check real travel routes and confirm the services available at the precise address you are considering.
Visit at the times you will actually live there
A town can feel quiet at noon and very different before work, after dark or during a summer heatwave. Make at least one weekday trip and examine commute reliability, supermarket access, pharmacies, medical offices and the distance to the nearest emergency department. Look beyond the attractive center of town: the neighborhood near the prospective home is what will shape daily routines.
Test internet connectivity, especially in rural California
Remote workers should never interpret a statewide broadband map as a personal service guarantee. The California Public Utilities Commission’s broadband map lists providers and reported speeds but is built from provider information and may lag reality. Enter the actual street address, request written confirmation from a provider, ask about installation lead time and check mobile coverage in the building.
Investigate total costs, not only asking rent
Compare utility deposits, electricity usage during extreme heat, renters or homeowners insurance, local transportation, vehicle expenses and any HOA fees. An inexpensive inland apartment may have a higher total monthly cost than expected. When comparing houses, check official parcel records and request applicable disclosures; a listing is not a legal determination about permitted use or safety.
Understand which government actually serves the address
Some homes have a nearby city’s postal address but sit in unincorporated county territory. Zoning, building permits, animal services, road maintenance and fire protection may come from different agencies. Use the city and county government’s official maps, not an address label alone. Check school district boundary maps separately.
Seven checks before you commit
- Visit on a weekday morning and evening, not only on a holiday.
- Time your actual commute and important errands.
- Verify household broadband service at the specific street address.
- Ask for insurance estimates before committing to a purchase.
- Confirm utilities, water, sewer or septic responsibilities.
- Read city council or county supervisor notices about planned roads and construction.
- Keep copies of dated source records and recheck them before signing.
