NEVADA COUNTY — October 26, 2026. A county assistance program helped owners spay or neuter 343 cats and dogs during its first year, reducing the cost of veterinary procedures that can be unaffordable for households on fixed incomes. County supervisors funded the original pilot with $75,000, and officials say it is now entering its second year.

How the program controls costs

Nevada County partnered with nonprofit organizations SNIP, Animal Save and Gold Country Animal Clinic. The county says procedures normally cost approximately $300–$900 depending on the animal, whereas the program spent an average of $218 per procedure through partnerships. The goal is to reduce unwanted litters and help prevent overcrowding of local shelters.

How to request assistance

Because demand is high, the county says new requests are being accepted onto a waitlist. That is not a guarantee of an immediate appointment, a fully free operation for every resident or guaranteed availability of a mobile clinic. Officials are exploring mobile veterinary options for people who have difficulty reaching current facilities.

Residents should follow Nevada County’s Spay and Neuter Program for eligibility, application steps and updates. Eligibility and availability may change during the second program year.
