CALIFORNIA — October 26, 2026. The California Arts Council voted to add a dedicated Native American Artist Grant Program to its planned fiscal year 2027–28 grant portfolio, marking a new approach to supporting Native artists and cultural practitioners throughout the state.

Program details still under development

The council consulted Native artists and culture bearers through three listening sessions with 38 participants and four Native Artist Advisory Committee meetings. Participants emphasized flexible support, accessible applications, community-led review and recognition of both traditional and contemporary art forms. The council says award sizes, eligibility and application dates have not yet been finalized; the new grant should not be described as open today.

Another $4 million for Cultural Districts

Separately, the council approved a new Cultural District Activation Grant Program supported by a $4 million appropriation. California’s 24 existing designated Cultural Districts will be able to apply for awards of up to $150,000 each, covering community art, staffing, marketing and related activities. These grants require a 1-to-1 match, which can include eligible in-kind contributions.

Applications for cultural district grants are expected to open in January 2027, with allocations anticipated in April. Another designation round is planned in 2027, but participation does not guarantee a future award.
