LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. — The county Department of Public Health has updated its beach-water warnings ahead of the weekend. Its October 29, 2026 notice identifies five areas where people should avoid swimming, surfing or playing in ocean water because recent tests found bacteria above state health standards. It also reports that warnings have been lifted at three other locations.

Where the October 29 warnings apply

  • Dockweiler State Beach: Ballona Creek, 100 yards up and down the coast from the creek near Tower 40.
  • Marina del Rey: the entire swim area at Mother’s Beach.
  • Santa Monica: 100 yards up and down the coast from Santa Monica Pier.
  • Malibu: 100 yards up and down the coast from Malibu Point at Surfrider Beach, near Lifeguard Tower 3.
  • Avalon, Catalina Island: the entire swim area west of the Green Pleasure Pier.

Three places removed from the warning list

The same October 29 announcement says recent water samples met state standards at Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu, Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach near Tower 18, and Ashland Avenue storm drain in Santa Monica near South Tower 28. The county lifted its warnings for those specified areas.

These are location-specific water-use warnings, not an announcement that every beach in Los Angeles County is closed. Bacterial results can change with runoff, tides and new sampling. The October 29 list is a snapshot of the agency’s reported findings and should not be treated as a permanent all-clear for the rest of the weekend.

How to verify current conditions

Before entering the water, consult the LA County beach-water advisory map or call the 24-hour recorded hotline at 1-800-525-5662. Avoid contact with water in a posted warning zone until the county reports it has cleared.
