SACRAMENTO — October 26, 2026. Californians preparing for the November 3 general election have a statewide early-voting date worth checking: Saturday, October 31. The California Secretary of State says in-person early-voting opportunities will be available throughout the state that Saturday. But not every individual polling place or vote center operates every day, so voters need to confirm the specific county location and hours before traveling.

Use the official statewide location tool—not an old social-media map

The state directs voters to California’s official early voting locator. County election offices publish additional venue details and may provide accessible equipment and ballot drop-off opportunities. Voting centers in Voter’s Choice Act counties began opening October 24, while location and operating-hour rules vary elsewhere. Your assigned voting jurisdiction depends on your residence, not the location of a newspaper.

Missed the October 19 online registration cutoff?

California’s ordinary registration deadline was October 19, but eligible voters may use Same Day (conditional) Voter Registration at their county elections office or an eligible voting site through November 3. A provisional ballot can be counted once officials verify eligibility. Residents should confirm where that service is offered rather than assume every ballot drop box processes registrations.

Ballots by mail: October 27 is advice, not an absolute legal cutoff

The Secretary of State recommends mailing ballots at least seven days before November 3 so they receive a timely postmark. That makes October 27 a recommended date, not the legal last day ballots may be mailed. A mailed ballot must be postmarked by Election Day, November 3, and received by the county no later than November 10. If mailing on November 3, the state recommends obtaining a manual postmark from a postal clerk inside a post office. Voters can instead use an official drop box or return a ballot in person by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
