DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. — For people living, working or visiting near the Pacific coast, knowing which streets lie in a tsunami hazard area should happen before an earthquake, not during one.
Where to find the local maps
The California Geological Survey publishes a Del Norte County tsunami hazard area map that residents can explore online. The county Office of Emergency Services also links evacuation maps for Crescent City, Fort Dick/Lake Earl, Klamath and Smith River.
These resources help people determine whether a home, school, workplace or favorite coastal destination is inside a mapped hazard area. A map is not a prediction that a tsunami is occurring, and geographic risk can vary significantly within one town.
Natural warning signs matter
The City of Crescent City identifies tsunami preparedness as an important local safety issue and points residents to the county’s emergency agency and other public resources. If strong or prolonged shaking occurs near the coast, follow official tsunami safety guidance and do not wait for a phone notification if natural warning signs require immediate movement to safe ground.
Families and businesses can review a safe route on foot, consider what to do if roads are blocked and plan for visitors unfamiliar with the coast. Emergency messages and marked evacuation signs take priority over general travel instructions.
