VALLEJO, SOLANO COUNTY — OCTOBER 18, 2026. Caltrans is warning Vallejo drivers, pedestrians and nearby businesses about upcoming night work on State Route 29 (Sonoma Boulevard). From October 19 through October 23, the department plans major paving work between Curtola Parkway and Mississippi Street, with nightly lane reductions and temporary restrictions on nearby sidewalk, alley and parking access.

What changes on Sonoma Boulevard?

Caltrans’ October 16 traffic advisory says two lanes will be closed during the active work period, while at least one lane will remain open for traffic. Drivers should therefore expect delays and possible turning or access changes, but should not interpret the notice as a scheduled complete shutdown of every lane on SR-29.

The department says work is scheduled Monday through Friday, from 5 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning beginning October 19. The earlier October 16 start time was 4 p.m.; the main upcoming period has a 5 p.m. start.

Where crews will be working

  • Earlier segment: Sequoia Avenue near California State University Maritime Academy to Curtola Parkway — paving scheduled within the October 13–19 period.
  • October 19–23 segment: Curtola Parkway to Mississippi Street — the section Caltrans identifies for the upcoming nighttime paving.
  • Wider program: An approximately six-mile Sonoma Boulevard corridor extends toward the Napa/Solano County line.

The work includes pavement improvements and operations involving curbs, medians and lighting. This article describes the October 16 announced schedule; the specific street block under construction may vary as the work advances.

Pedestrians and local businesses: what to know

Caltrans warns that grinding and paving next to sidewalks can lead to temporary closures of nearby alleys and parking zones on a rolling basis. Pedestrians who need to cross near active construction are advised to alert a worker for guidance. Do not walk through closed equipment areas or assume an alley is accessible simply because its normal entrance is nearby.

Some residents may notice nighttime noise and vibration while grinding and paving is underway. Deliveries, appointments and evening commutes may require extra travel time; check ahead with businesses located within an active work zone if access is important.

Why is SR-29 being rebuilt?

The lane restrictions are part of the larger SR-29/Sonoma Boulevard Vallejo Pavement Rehabilitation and Complete Streets Project. Caltrans has divided the corridor into three geographic construction sections. That broader program aims to improve pavement and road conditions, but the October traffic announcement specifically addresses the paving schedule and temporary access impacts rather than a completed reconstruction.

How to check current road conditions

All work is weather dependent and may change. Drivers can use Caltrans QuickMap for updated road information. Caltrans also publishes district traffic notices, and its highway information line is 1-800-427-ROAD. Always follow temporary work-zone signs and the directions of crews on site.

What changes for residents?

People driving through downtown Vallejo at night may face a narrower roadway. Those living or working near Sonoma Boulevard should be ready for temporary parking, alley or sidewalk impacts, particularly between Curtola Parkway and Mississippi Street. The official map identifies the project’s wider segments but is not a minute-by-minute traffic forecast.

Other regional travel advisories this week include Burlingame’s El Camino Real detours and SR-37 bridge lane reductions. Each is a distinct project and may have separate changes.
