KERN COUNTY — November 4, 2026. Early election returns from two eastern Kern County communities put Ridgecrest and California City mayoral contests in focus. Both races had initial reported counts on November 3, while other local races—including Ridgecrest City Council, Sierra Sands school trustees and Indian Wells Valley water directors—required further verification before a reliable result could be published.

Ridgecrest: Jeremy Vaughan ahead

At 8:49 p.m. Pacific on November 3, Decision Desk HQ reported Jeremy Vaughan with 2,492 votes (69.28%) and Megan Washington with 1,105 (30.72%). The count represents 3,597 reported candidate votes at that time, not final Kern County certification. Read Ridgecrest News’ complete local mayoral report.

California City: Isaac Barcelona ahead

The same 8:49 p.m. snapshot for California City’s mayor listed Isaac Barcelona with 807 votes (61.32%) and Marquette Hawkins with 509 (38.68%). The difference was 298 votes among 1,316 counted candidate votes. See California City News’ detailed report.

Other contests that deserve separate reporting

Voters also selected members of the Ridgecrest City Council and considered Sierra Sands Unified School District trustee races in Areas 2 and 3. Indian Wells Valley Water District also held a directors’ election. The Decision Desk HQ Kern County election index lists these contests, but the individual council and water races were still marked “Awaiting results” in the source view checked for this article. California58 will not name a winner without verified totals.

One desert region, different electorates

Ridgecrest and California City are both incorporated municipalities in Kern County, but their voters choose separate city officials. Nearby communities such as Inyokern and unincorporated settlements do not automatically vote for either city’s mayor. And the school district centered on Trona crosses the Kern–San Bernardino region without making Trona a Kern County city; Searles Valley News separately reports the cross-county Trona school board election.

How results will be updated

County canvassing continues after the general election as valid outstanding ballots are processed. The Kern County Elections Division is the authoritative source for certified county totals. The two mayoral numbers cited above are media tabulations timestamped 8:49 p.m. November 3, not the most recently certified outcome.
