KERN COUNTY, California — November 5, 2026. A countywide ballot measure concerning funding for the California Living Museum zoo (CALM) has an early Yes majority. Measure Z received 68,708 Yes votes (55.20%) versus 55,764 No (44.80%), according to the Kern County Elections Division’s November 4 election-night result. The Yes margin is 12,944 votes. The county ballot labels the tax question as requiring a simple majority, but the result has not yet been officially certified.
What the ballot asks
The county describes Measure Z as the California Living Museum zoo tax question. The short label establishes the subject, not the full tax mechanism. Before claiming a particular sales-tax rate, amount of revenue or funded exhibit, a newsroom must examine the adopted measure’s complete text and fiscal analysis. This article does not invent those provisions based solely on an election-results table.
How to interpret a countywide vote
The report lists 124,472 valid Yes/No selections on Measure Z. They are not necessarily identical to the number of people who voted for governor or any city council seat. Some voters skip particular ballot questions, and rejected or still-unprocessed votes may affect subsequent totals. An early 55.20% Yes share is a lead above a simple-majority threshold, but only a properly completed canvass establishes passage.
Why this is different from city measures
In the same county election, cities such as Shafter, Arvin, Delano and California City had their own local tax or governance measures. Those electorates are limited by city boundaries, while a Kern countywide measure can be voted on by eligible people across incorporated and unincorporated county communities. Adding city Yes/No totals separately to a countywide report would double count ballots already included in the broader tally.
Local interest and oversight
CALM is a familiar regional wildlife and educational attraction. Supporters and opponents of a zoo-related tax may differ in how they prioritize public funding, but vote totals alone do not establish their motives. Any final spending, auditing and revenue restrictions will be governed by the authorized language. Residents should track both election certification and the county’s future budget or implementation documents.
