KINGS COUNTY, Calif. — Kings County public health officials reported a West Nile virus-related death in an announcement dated August 1, 2026, according to the department’s official news archive. The report followed a separate July 23 announcement about a West Nile virus-related resident case.

What the county has documented

The Kings County Department of Public Health press release directory lists the August announcement in English and Spanish. The listing confirms that the department issued the notice; it should not be treated as a live count of current infections or evidence that every part of the county has the same risk.

West Nile virus is usually spread through bites from infected mosquitoes. Most infections cause no symptoms, while a smaller share can lead to serious illness. Older adults and some people with medical vulnerabilities are at higher risk of severe complications.

Steps residents can take

Hanford, Lemoore, Corcoran, Avenal and rural households can reduce mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from containers, maintaining screens and using appropriate insect repellent according to its label. Residents experiencing concerning symptoms should contact a medical professional rather than attempt to diagnose an illness from online information.

This article describes the county’s 2026 public-health announcement, not a prediction of active mosquito counts today.
