LOS ANGELES COUNTY, California — October 14, 2026. On Tuesday, November 3, voters in Los Angeles County will take part in California’s statewide general election. Residents of Los Angeles, Lancaster, Lake Los Angeles and Long Beach share statewide choices, but do not necessarily share every city, legislative, school or special-district contest. Here is what is confirmed statewide and where to find the exact local ballot.
Who is running for statewide office?
In the governor’s top-two race, Xavier Becerra, Democrat, faces Steve Hilton, Republican. The ballot also includes:
- Lieutenant Governor: Fiona Ma (D) and Gloria Romero (R)
- Secretary of State: Shirley N. Weber (D) and Don Wagner (R)
- Controller: Malia M. Cohen (D) and Herb W Morgan (R)
- Treasurer: Eleni Kounalakis (D) and Jennifer Hawks (R)
- Attorney General: Rob Bonta (D) and Michael E. Gates (R)
- Insurance Commissioner: Ben Allen (D) and Jane Kim (D)
- Superintendent of Public Instruction (nonpartisan): Richard Barrera and Sonja Shaw
The State Board of Equalization seat also appears, with a different candidate pairing in each of its four districts. Read the California Secretary of State’s candidate guide for candidate information and district-specific details.
Congress, Legislature and Los Angeles County
Voters see the U.S. House contest assigned to their congressional district and their California Assembly contest. Regular State Senate elections occur in even-numbered Senate districts this year; an individual voter sees that race only if their assigned district is on the ballot. County, municipal and special-district elections or measures can also appear where applicable. No single countywide list can accurately identify all candidates for every address.
Fourteen statewide ballot propositions
All California voters will decide the following statewide measures. This is a subject index, not an argument for or against any measure; read the official text and impartial analysis before drawing conclusions.
- Proposition 1: housing affordability bonds
- Proposition 2: state rainy-day fund
- Proposition 3: high-income tax extension for schools and health care
- Proposition 4: public financing of election campaigns
- Proposition 5: statewide recall procedure
- Proposition 37: middle-income new-home buyer loans
- Proposition 38: immunology research bonds
- Proposition 39: voter identification requirement
- Proposition 40: one-time tax on certain taxpayers
- Proposition 41: state tax/spending-limit rules and audits
- Proposition 42: personal property and certain retroactive state taxes
- Proposition 43: local revenue-raising rules
- Proposition 44: community health clinic spending requirement
- Proposition 45: environmental review changes
What matters specifically in Los Angeles County?
For communities including Los Angeles, Lancaster, Lake Los Angeles and Long Beach, local questions worth asking candidates include housing, public transit, wildfire recovery and school funding. These are civic issues for scrutiny, not claims that any particular issue has a local proposition on this ballot. Ask what the candidates actually control, what funding they propose and how residents could verify results.
Lake Los Angeles is part of Los Angeles County, not a city with its own municipal elections; Lancaster-area and unincorporated-area ballots may differ. See the community-focused Lake Los Angeles News election story for a local starting point. The official Los Angeles County elections office is the authoritative starting point for published local candidate lists, ballot measures, ballot-style information and the county voter guide. Compare your assigned districts with that office’s materials; the precise local ballot depends on the registered voting address.
