MARIN COUNTY — October 26, 2026. The Marin County Board of Supervisors voted 5–0 on October 20 for a resolution governing use of county property, personnel and information in connection with certain federal civil immigration enforcement operations. The county announced the action October 21.

What county officials changed

Marin County says the policy generally bars federal immigration agencies from using county-controlled property as staging or processing locations for enforcement, except where required by law. It requires appropriate legal authority to enter nonpublic county spaces and reaffirms confidentiality rules for county-held information. Employees must report relevant activity on county property to the County Executive within 24 hours of learning of it, while the Sheriff’s Office and Probation Department must provide monthly interaction reports to County Counsel.

What the policy does not do

The new resolution does not abolish federal immigration enforcement, prevent federal officers from entering every public place or alter federal immigration law. County officials, including supervisors who supported the measure, explicitly acknowledged limits to local authority. Reports of a blanket countywide prohibition on federal officers would be inaccurate.

Marin also says it allocated an additional $1 million in 2026 for immigration legal services and emergency assistance, bringing its two-year investment to $1.5 million. Those spending figures concern county initiatives, not proof that every resident automatically qualifies for funded representation.

Readers should consult the county’s official Immigrant Rights & Resources pages for referrals and not interpret editorial reporting as individualized legal advice.
