NEVADA COUNTY — October 26, 2026. As communities prepare for potential severe winter storms, Nevada County Assessor Rolf Kleinhans is reminding homeowners that damage from natural disasters may qualify for a reduced property assessment. The October 21 county guidance addresses residents whose taxable property has been damaged or destroyed by a qualifying calamity.

How relief is reviewed

The Assessor’s Office must review eligibility and supporting documentation. The county reports claims are typically processed within 30–90 days once all requested records are received, but that is an estimate, not a guarantee for each homeowner. Tax relief is not automatically applied to an entire ZIP code or to household goods that are not subject to property assessment.

Do not skip a regular tax payment on the strength of a general notice

The county specifically cautions that both installments of the current secured property-tax bill remain due, even if the home suffered damage. Adjustments are often completed through a supplemental assessment after review. This is not the same rule as a separately approved postponement program in other counties.

Owners should also verify their current mailing address with the Assessor, because tax bills continue to be mailed to the address on file unless it is changed. For application and qualification questions contact the Nevada County Assessor, email assessor@nevadacountyca.gov or call 530-265-1232.
