BIG SUR, California — Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will reopen to visitors Friday, October 16, 2026, after its temporary closure during the Timber Fire. Day-use areas, the campground and several popular paths will return, but six fire-damaged trails remain closed until further notice.
What reopens October 16
California State Parks says visitors will regain access to many of the park’s main facilities:
- day-use areas and the campground;
- Buzzards Roost Trail;
- River Path and Nature Trail;
- Redwood Grove Boardwalk;
- Nature Center and Campfire Center;
- Big Sur Lodge.
Travelers planning an overnight stay should still confirm a specific reservation. Reopening the campground does not guarantee an available campsite or lodge room.
Six trails that remain closed
The Timber Fire left hazards that can persist after flames are contained: unstable trees, falling rocks and debris, damaged tread, erosion, and a heightened risk of debris flows and flash flooding during rain. The following trails remain closed:
- Pfeiffer Falls Trail;
- Valley View Trail;
- Oak Grove Trail;
- Mt. Manuel Trail;
- Big Sur River Gorge Trail;
- Pine Ridge Trail.
State Parks says visitors entering closed trails or burned areas will be cited. The restriction is not merely a restoration request; post-fire hazards may be difficult to see before they fail.
Why the park closed
The Timber Fire began August 8 and burned approximately 517 acres inside Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, including many trails. The park became a base camp and incident command site for CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service and cooperating agencies.
Over roughly two months, thousands of firefighters and support personnel used the park while protecting Big Sur communities, infrastructure and natural resources. State Parks staff also assisted with evacuations, infrastructure protection and resource protection. The October 16 reopening follows the park’s transition out of that emergency-response role.
Before driving to Big Sur
- Check the official park page. Review the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park status on the day of travel.
- Confirm the trail. Do not rely on an old map or saved hiking itinerary.
- Watch the weather. Rain can increase rockfall, debris-flow and flash-flood risks in burned terrain.
- Verify lodging or camping. Park access and reservation availability are separate questions.
- Check Highway 1. Road restrictions can change independently of the park reopening.
