RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. — November 4, 2026. Public health officials are warning that influenza activity is rising much earlier than many residents expect. In a November 3 announcement, Riverside University Health System — Public Health confirmed the first influenza-related death of the 2026–27 season in the county. The deceased was a man older than 65 from western Riverside County; the department did not release his identity.

Flu activity already described as very high

According to the county, data from emergency departments, hospitalizations, laboratory testing and wastewater monitoring indicate that influenza is rising rapidly and has reached its “very high” activity threshold. The development precedes the Thanksgiving travel period, when respiratory illnesses often spread through family gatherings, classrooms and workplaces. The reported death is a confirmed event, but it should not be treated as a forecast of how many people will become ill this winter.

Who is especially vulnerable?

County health officials identify elevated risk of severe disease among adults 65 and older, children younger than five, pregnant people, people with weakened immune systems and those with certain chronic conditions. Flu can cause fever, cough, sore throat and body aches and can sometimes lead to severe complications. A person can also spread respiratory viruses without immediately realizing they are ill.

What the county recommends

The health department recommends annual influenza vaccination for people six months of age and older, along with frequent handwashing, staying home while sick, covering coughs, improving indoor ventilation and discussing treatment promptly with a healthcare provider if symptoms develop, especially for those at higher risk. Vaccination reduces the likelihood of severe outcomes but does not guarantee that infection will never occur.

For vaccination and local respiratory-virus information, residents can consult Riverside University Health System — Public Health or their regular clinician. If someone is experiencing serious breathing difficulty or another medical emergency, seek immediate medical attention.
