SEARLES VALLEY, California — October 19, 2026. A local newspaper should not send residents to the wrong government. Trona and the surrounding Searles Valley communities are unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County. That means residents looking for county decisions cannot simply rely on the agenda for Ridgecrest, a separate city in Kern County.
The county’s official meeting portal
The primary place to begin is San Bernardino County’s official Legistar portal. It lists Board of Supervisors meetings and provides links to agenda documents, supporting materials, and available records or video. The portal identifies the specific meeting and date so residents can avoid confusing an older agenda with current business.
County-level actions may affect roads, land-use matters in unincorporated communities, budgets, contracts, public health programs and county services. That does not mean every topic concerning Trona appears on every agenda. Residents should search the actual meeting records for relevant project names, locations, departments and item numbers.
Other public bodies can matter just as much
School districts, water providers, fire agencies and other special districts may have their own elected or appointed boards. Their boundaries do not always coincide with a city boundary, and their minutes may be maintained on separate sites. Before sharing a meeting notice, check the agency’s jurisdiction and whether it actually serves Trona, Argus, Pioneer Point or another part of the valley.
Four questions to ask about a government notice
- Who issued it? Identify the actual city, county, school district or special district.
- What territory does it cover? A meeting in the nearest city may have no decision-making power over your property.
- What stage is the item at? A proposed ordinance or contract is different from an approved decision.
- How can the public participate? Follow the official notice for comment deadlines, access and accessibility options.
Why this matters for local coverage
Searles Valley News is developing a shared California58 Civic Watch directory so community members can reach the bodies responsible for their area. The first step is verified official links; future automated agenda updates should appear only where a dependable official data source is available. No unconfirmed meeting dates should be invented.
