LOS ANGELES COUNTY — OCTOBER 18, 2026. Drivers traveling between Hollywood, Studio City and the San Fernando Valley should prepare for another round of overnight work on U.S. Highway 101 through Cahuenga Pass. Caltrans District 7 announced lane reductions, freeway-connector closures and possible ramp restrictions during the week of October 19–24, 2026, as crews continue paving and rehabilitating the freeway.
Which US-101 lanes will be affected?
Northbound U.S. 101 between Highland Avenue and State Route 170 is expected to be reduced to as few as two lanes during work, and to one lane during the most restrictive overnight periods. Caltrans lists closures of up to three lanes as early as 10 p.m.–6 a.m., with up to four lanes closed from 2–4 a.m. during the weekday work period. On the Friday-night/Saturday-morning schedule, restrictions can extend later into Saturday morning.
Southbound U.S. 101 between SR-170 and Highland Avenue faces closures of up to two lanes starting as early as 9 p.m.–5 a.m. for the weekday overnight schedule. The department’s separate Friday-night schedule continues into Saturday morning, October 24.
Major connector closures to know
Several freeway-to-freeway movements may be fully closed during specific nighttime windows, even when through lanes remain open:
- Northbound Hollywood Freeway US-101 to northbound Ventura Freeway US-101: scheduled 11:59 p.m.–6 a.m. during the weekday period; Caltrans directs traffic via Vineland Avenue, Moorpark Street and Tujunga Avenue.
- Southbound Hollywood Freeway US-101 to eastbound SR-134: scheduled 11:59 p.m.–6 a.m.; Caltrans identifies the Vineland Avenue and Riverside Drive detour.
- Southbound Ventura Freeway US-101 to southbound Hollywood Freeway US-101: also scheduled 11:59 p.m.–6 a.m., using local detours according to the posted signs.
- Southbound SR-170 to southbound US-101: scheduled 10 p.m.–5 a.m., with routing via eastbound SR-134 and local streets.
There are additional possible on- and off-ramp closures at Universal Studios Boulevard, Ventura Boulevard, Barham Boulevard, Lankershim Boulevard, Vineland Avenue and other access points. The exact list differs by direction and night. Drivers should read the full Caltrans closure table rather than assuming their customary ramp will be accessible.
Friday night requires a different plan
Caltrans provides a separate schedule from Friday, October 23, into Saturday, October 24. Some ramp closures can last until late morning, rather than ending by the ordinary morning commute. For example, the department lists restrictions affecting Universal Studios Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard access into Saturday morning. Check the latest notice if traveling to work, a studio, the airport or a weekend event.
Why the project is happening
The agency says the $24.3 million Cahuenga Pass pavement rehabilitation project includes work on asphalt lanes, ramps and shoulders; concrete slab repairs; guardrails and related roadside features; striping; and curb-ramp accessibility improvements at 23 locations. The overall project is expected to continue until summer 2029. The project value is not the cost of this single week of closures.
What drivers and neighbors should do
Construction can bring noise, vibration and dust to nearby residential and commercial areas. Caltrans says the timetable may change due to weather or operational needs. If possible, avoid the most restricted overnight period, allow extra time, watch for temporary message signs and follow the marked detours. For current conditions, use Caltrans QuickMap.
