Drivers using the Vincent Thomas Bridge between San Pedro and Terminal Island should plan for five overnight northbound closures beginning Sunday, Oct. 11, plus a daytime southbound lane closure on Saturday, Oct. 10. Caltrans says the work is part of preparations for the bridge’s planned 16-month full closure starting Nov. 7, 2026.
Northbound closure schedule
Northbound State Route 47 will be closed between Harbor Boulevard and Ferry Street on five consecutive nights:
- Sunday night, Oct. 11, through Monday morning
- Monday night, Oct. 12, through Tuesday morning
- Tuesday night, Oct. 13, through Wednesday morning
- Wednesday night, Oct. 14, through Thursday morning
- Thursday night, Oct. 15, through Friday morning, Oct. 16
Each closure is scheduled from 10:45 p.m. to 6:45 a.m. The closures block eastbound travel across the bridge toward Long Beach.
Saturday lane closure
Caltrans also plans to close the right lane of southbound SR-47 on the bridge from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.
Ramps affected
During the overnight closures, the northbound on-ramps at Gaffey Street and Channel Street will be closed, along with the connector from southbound Interstate 110 to northbound SR-47.
Official detour
Caltrans directs drivers around the closure using Pacific Coast Highway, State Route 103 and State Route 47. Drivers should allow extra time and check Caltrans QuickMap before leaving because construction schedules can change.
Why the bridge is closing
Crews will install working platforms and bracing for the deck-replacement project. The Vincent Thomas Bridge is then scheduled to close completely for about 16 months beginning Nov. 7, 2026. The advance work means travelers, port employees and freight operators should begin testing alternate routes now rather than waiting for the long-term shutdown.
California58 is also tracking current state highway work, including the overnight Highway 1 closure in Big Sur.
What drivers should do
- Use the official detour instead of neighborhood streets.
- Check every trip in real time on Caltrans QuickMap.
- Allow additional time for port, airport and freight-related travel.
- Watch for signs and workers near the construction zone.
- Recheck the schedule before the Nov. 7 full closure.
