MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. — Yosemite National Park is not requiring an advance vehicle-entry reservation during 2026, according to the National Park Service. For visitors approaching from Mariposa, Midpines and El Portal, that removes one planning step—but not the need to check lodging, fees and road conditions.
Entry versus overnight stays
The National Park Service says the park is using traffic monitoring, parking management and staffing rather than a season-long timed vehicle-entry reservation system this year. Entrance fees still apply unless visitors qualify for a valid pass or fee waiver. Weekends and holidays can still involve congestion, and park staff may manage parking or vehicle flow.
Overnight plans are a separate matter. Campground and lodging reservations are recommended and may be required. Wilderness permits are required for overnight backcountry trips, while Half Dome permits apply when the cables are in use. Visitors should not assume that entry to the park automatically authorizes overnight camping or backpacking.
Before setting out on Highway 140
Travelers through Mariposa and El Portal should check weather, seasonal roads and NPS trip-planning updates, especially when mountain conditions change. The park advises allowing time for delays and considering destinations outside Yosemite Valley when central-area traffic is heavy.
