IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. — Dust, smoke and unpleasant odors are among the conditions residents can report to the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District. The agency also publishes air-quality readings for several Imperial Valley communities, giving residents a way to distinguish measured pollution levels from unverified impressions.

Check air quality by community

On the Air District website, a public dashboard shows Air Quality Index information for communities including Brawley, Calexico, El Centro, Niland and Westmorland. The AQI ranges from good to hazardous; sensitive groups may need to take precautions before pollution reaches levels considered unhealthy for the broader population. The dashboard’s readings and daily burn notices can change, so check the current date on the display.

Report a dust, smoke or odor problem

The Air District instructs complainants to call 442-265-1800 or use the online form on its Compliance and Air Quality Complaint page. Helpful details include when and where an incident occurred, the nature of the suspected emissions and the possible source if known. The agency says complaints are typically assigned for investigation within 24 hours of receipt, while those made outside business hours may be reviewed the next business day.

The air agency is not a first responder. Emergencies requiring an immediate response should be directed to 911. Residents documenting recurring problems can record dates, approximate times and weather conditions for a more useful complaint history.
