SUSANVILLE, Calif. — Lassen County Animal Shelter has received a no-kill designation associated with Best Friends Animal Society after reporting a 95% save rate, according to an official county announcement published October 29, 2026.

What the designation means

Best Friends uses a 90% save-rate benchmark in its no-kill framework. The county says the shelter exceeded that threshold after months of reviewing data and making changes to animal care and placement practices. The term does not mean euthanasia is never performed; the county’s announcement acknowledges situations in which humane euthanasia may still be necessary.

Animals helped this year

According to the county’s report, the shelter took in 525 animals from January 1 through October 8, 2026, including 121 kittens and 88 puppies. Over that period, officials reported 139 adoptions and 274 transfers.

The shelter credited improvements in veterinary access, including work with Thompson Peak Vet Clinic, and support from regional rescue organizations and local residents. Partnerships can expand placement options when shelters reach capacity.

What residents can do

Prospective adopters can inquire about animals currently available, adoption requirements and fees through the county’s official animal shelter channels. Residents who cannot adopt can consider fostering, donations or sharing verified shelter postings. Availability changes as animals enter and leave care.
