Every California community matters. California58 is building a statewide local-news network serving incorporated cities, census-designated places, unincorporated settlements and smaller named communities across all 58 counties.
One place, one clearly identified news home
Every community in our geographic coverage register should be findable by its own name and connected to one responsible local newspaper. That does not mean creating a separate editorial team or newspaper for every small hamlet. Closely connected settlements may share one local newspaper while retaining distinct place profiles, local search entries, alerts, stories and reporting requests.
For example, Searles Valley News covers Trona, Argus and Pioneer Point together. Readers in each community should still be able to find the newspaper using their own town’s name.
How we map California
Our core reference is the U.S. Census Gazetteer Files, including incorporated places and census-designated places (CDPs). We also consult the USGS Geographic Names Information System, county sources, and verified local documentation for named settlements not separately counted by the Census Bureau.
A CDP is a statistical designation, not a municipal government. A settlement may have a local name without being an incorporated city or a CDP. Place names can repeat between counties; geographic identifiers and verified county information are required to avoid mixing communities.
When communities share a newspaper
- Community identity: keep familiar place names visible, including historically recognized communities.
- Shared local issues: consider schools, roads, emergency services, water, civic institutions and community organizations.
- Geography: use confirmed boundaries and actual access routes; straight-line proximity alone is not sufficient in mountain or desert areas.
- Editorial accountability: identify the newspaper responsible for each place and offer direct ways to submit tips and corrections.
What counts as real coverage
A local place profile or founding newspaper page is an invitation to coverage, not proof that regular local reporting already exists. California58 distinguishes verified local articles from statewide notices and regional stories. New editions and profiles without sufficient original, sourced reporting should not be presented as mature newsrooms. Our operating target is at least five substantive, locally relevant articles for each established local newspaper, followed by regular updates.
Tell us about a missing community
If your town, neighborhood or unincorporated settlement is missing, incorrectly assigned to a newspaper, or listed under the wrong county, send our newsroom a correction or local story. Readers are also invited to participate in Community Voice, where communities identify reporting priorities.
