MALIBU, California — California State Parks plans to begin emergency repairs to the closed ocean-end section of Malibu Pier in mid-October 2026. The $2.125 million project is expected to take about three months, but the agency has not announced a reopening date for the repaired section.

What is closed — and what remains open

The end of Malibu Pier has been closed since January 2025 after inspections identified structural concerns. The closure does not cover the entire landmark: visitors may continue using the open portion of the pier, designated fishing areas and nearby beach services, subject to posted restrictions.

According to the State Parks FAQ, Malibu Farm Restaurant at the Pier remains open outside the closure area. Beach rentals and equipment services are also available before the closed section. Malibu Farm Pier Café and the surf shop/souvenir shop at the end of the pier remain closed.

What the repair contract covers

California State Parks awarded the emergency contract to Cushman Contracting Corporation. The work will repair or replace deteriorated and missing pilings and install replacement bracing to strengthen the structure.

The project is funded through Proposition 4, the 2024 Climate Bond. State Parks says above-water and underwater inspections confirmed the need for major repairs, and a specialized ocean engineering consultant completed a structural assessment in June 2026.

Timeline: construction is not the same as reopening

  • January 2025: the end of the pier was temporarily closed because of structural concerns.
  • June 2026: a comprehensive engineering assessment identified deteriorated and missing pilings.
  • Mid-October 2026: construction is expected to begin.
  • End of January 2027: State Parks expects the repair work to be completed.

The end-of-January target is a construction estimate, not a confirmed public reopening date. After the work is finished, State Parks will evaluate conditions and determine the next steps. The agency says no tentative reopening date has been set.

What visitors should do

  • Check the official Malibu Pier closure FAQ before driving to Malibu.
  • Follow barriers and posted signs; do not enter the closed end section.
  • Use only the designated fishing locations that remain open.
  • Confirm restaurant, shop or rental hours directly if that business is the purpose of the trip.
  • Expect construction activity and possible changes while emergency work proceeds.
