OROVILLE, Butte County — California Department of Water Resources crews have been preparing Oroville Dam’s main spillway for a routine annual inspection scheduled for October 12–16, 2026, according to a September 18 department update.
DWR said cleaning follows a winter in which the dam’s main spillway was used for flood-control releases. Before an inspection, workers remove debris with pressure washers, brooms and small equipment, allowing engineers to examine concrete surfaces and other critical elements.
What engineers inspect
The September 18 Lake Oroville bulletin says engineers examine concrete slabs, walls, joint sealants and structures designed to dissipate the energy of water flowing down the spillway. DWR indicates that routine maintenance, potentially including sealant replacement, may occur later in fall depending on inspection findings and reservoir conditions.
This is a scheduled infrastructure safety and maintenance activity. It is not an announcement of a new spillway failure or a declaration of an emergency.
Why the annual inspection matters
Oroville Dam is central to California’s State Water Project. Releases and reservoir storage affect water supply, downstream flood protection and the Feather River ecosystem. DWR states that the spillway was reconstructed under engineering and regulatory oversight and that routine inspection continues as part of dam management.
The department also gives updates to the Oroville Dam Citizens Advisory Commission, which provides a public forum for dam operations, maintenance and safety issues.
Other 2026 work near the dam
In an August 28, 2026 update, DWR described a separate vegetation restoration project near the main and emergency spillways. The project began in June and calls for seeding approximately 70 acres and replanting six acres of woody vegetation. DWR says fire-resilient landscaping was considered in project design.
Vegetation rehabilitation should not be confused with structural repairs to the concrete spillway. These programs have different goals and schedules.
Where to find results and current conditions
Visit the DWR news and Lake Oroville update pages for inspection findings and current reservoir information. An inspection being scheduled for October 12–16 does not establish that it was completed on schedule or that any particular recommendation has been adopted. California58 will distinguish subsequent findings from routine work described in advance.
