California58 Mission Trail · Mission 2 of 21 · Founded 1770 · Monterey County. California’s missions are historical places and, in many cases, active religious institutions. This independent guide separates the surviving site from the colonial history that created it.

Why Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo matters

The second California mission was founded on June 3, 1770, initially associated with Monterey before the mission community shifted to Carmel. It subsequently served as a major administrative center of the mission chain. The site is often identified with Junípero Serra, who died here in 1784 and was buried in the mission church.

Architecture and what survives

The stone church completed in 1797 replaced earlier adobe structures. Visitors can compare church architecture with museum collections, liturgical objects, gardens and restoration work. The present beautiful complex is the product of several distinct eras; following secularization, deterioration and later rebuilding profoundly changed what survived.

Indigenous history and what visitors should remember

The picturesque Carmel setting can obscure the Native communities whose lands and lives were reorganized by the mission system. A visitor should ask how land, labor, religion and disease affected Indigenous families in the wider Monterey Bay region, and recognize that descendants remain part of this landscape today.

California’s mission network was a system of colonization and religious conversion, not an empty-land settlement story. Mission communities existed on Native homelands; policies controlling labor, movement, religion and family life brought lasting harm. A balanced visit includes living Indigenous perspectives as well as architecture and Catholic heritage. California State Parks describes forced labor, violence and disease as major parts of this history.
