What is a California mission?

The 21 Spanish-era missions of Alta California were religious and colonial institutions established between 1769 and 1823. Their history includes Indigenous communities, forced labor, religious conversion, epidemic disease, resistance, agriculture, architecture, and the later transformation of California under Mexican and U.S. rule. They should not be described only as picturesque churches.

Oldest, newest, and how to travel

Oldest: San Diego de Alcalá (1769). Newest: San Francisco Solano (1823). The historic El Camino Real corridor connects the mission region, but today’s roads do not precisely reproduce the original trail. Allow multiple trips rather than assuming all 21 can be visited comfortably in a few days.
