California58 Missions Trail · Mission 21 of 21 · Established 1823 · Sonoma County. Explore the history, what survives today and how to plan a thoughtful visit to this part of California’s colonial past.
The history behind Mission San Francisco Solano
The twenty-first and final Alta California mission was established at Sonoma in 1823, after Mexico had become independent of Spain. This makes San Francisco Solano different from the earlier missions in the chain: its founding occurred in a new political era even though the colonial institution and its effects continued.
Architecture, survival and restoration
The mission site is managed as part of Sonoma State Historic Park, where visitors can also encounter military barracks and sites associated with the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt. The surviving complex includes later buildings and restoration work, so a tour can connect religious history, Mexican California, U.S. expansion and the shaping of Sonoma Plaza.
The people and stories beyond the mission walls
Sonoma’s Indigenous inhabitants experienced the mission system, secularization, changing governments and land dispossession in rapid succession. The story should not end with the founding of the last mission, nor with the raising of a flag in 1846. It should include what happened to Native people and their descendants through those transitions.
The California mission system was part of Spanish and later Mexican colonization. Native communities had long histories before missionaries arrived, and many suffered under forced labor, movement restrictions, epidemics and the loss of land. Present-day descendants continue their cultures. Architecture and Catholic practice are only parts of this history; interpretation should also acknowledge Indigenous survival, resistance and perspectives.
How to visit San Francisco Solano
Destination: 114 East Spain Street, Sonoma, CA 95476. County: Sonoma. Founded: 1823.
Sonoma Plaza is an excellent walking destination. The park operator supplies the latest information for the mission and Sonoma Barracks; check which historic buildings are included in admission and whether any galleries are temporarily closed.
Get directions to this historic site. Opening hours, visitor fees, guided-tour schedules, religious-service access and accessibility may change; always verify with the current property operator.
Sonoma: find the mission and the state historic park visitor entrance
Mission San Francisco Solano is part of Sonoma State Historic Park, a group of historic places around Sonoma Plaza. Historic references often give the mission as 114 East Spain Street, while the State Parks visitor guide lists its visitor contact address as 20 East Spain Street. They refer to the same plaza-area park system, but not necessarily the same door. Confirm your entry point and ticket location with State Parks.
Visitor information checked October 20, 2026: the park generally lists 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, with holiday closures. Its self-guided tour information lists $3 adults, $2 ages 6–17, and free admission for younger children; check current fees and what sites are covered. Allow time for the adjoining Sonoma Barracks and the Mexican California historical exhibits rather than treating the mission as an isolated building.
