The history behind Mission Santa Clara de Asís
Founded in January 1777, Santa Clara de Asís was the eighth mission in Alta California and was named for Clare of Assisi. Its history is tied to rivers, flooding and relocations. The mission’s modern setting inside Santa Clara University is unusual: a living college campus envelops a much older site, revealing the layers of Silicon Valley history.
Architecture, survival and restoration
Floods and earthquakes forced changes to the site and its buildings. A devastating 1926 fire led to further rebuilding, meaning visitors must distinguish restored and reconstructed elements from mission-era fabric. Art, bells and preserved pieces of the old complex provide physical links to the earlier institution.
The people and stories beyond the mission walls
The mission was established on Indigenous homelands in the Bay Area, with Ohlone history integral to the site. Santa Clara University specifically identifies the nearby cemetery area as a resting place for Ohlone and other people; it is a place for respect, not a shortcut or photo prop. The university now provides interpretive material and visiting guidance.
The California mission system was part of Spanish and later Mexican colonization. Native communities had long histories before missionaries arrived, and many suffered under forced labor, movement restrictions, epidemics and the loss of land. Present-day descendants continue their cultures. Architecture and Catholic practice are only parts of this history; interpretation should also acknowledge Indigenous survival, resistance and perspectives.
