IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. — Imperial County residents have until November 5, 2026 to provide input on a draft assessment examining how lithium development could affect health and daily life in the Imperial Valley.

What the study examines

In an October 5 announcement, Imperial County and researchers from the San Diego State University Research Foundation said the draft Lithium Valley Health Impact Assessment draws on research conducted between 2023 and 2026. The project considers direct lithium extraction and associated development, not just the mineral’s potential economic value. Topics include air and water, increased traffic, occupational safety, access to health care, jobs, stress and general well-being.

A health impact assessment evaluates potential benefits and risks to communities. It is not a finding that a particular proposed facility has already caused a specific health condition. County officials say public feedback will be considered when finalizing the report.

How residents can respond

The county has posted links to the draft, explanatory materials and an online feedback survey on its official announcement page. Comments may be submitted in English or Spanish through November 5. Residents of communities near the Salton Sea, Calipatria, Niland and other potential project areas may wish to examine how local transportation, water access and environmental concerns are addressed.

Those commenting should describe the specific concern, relevant place and evidence where available. The published deadline is for this consultation period; residents should check the county site for any subsequent changes.
