INYO COUNTY, California — November 5, 2026. Election night is over in the Eastern Sierra, but Inyo County’s contests are far from a certified finish. The county elections office says it still has an estimated 3,192 mailed ballots received from October 30 through Election Day, plus 120 provisional or conditional ballots and 26 challenged ballots awaiting review or processing. Together, those categories total 3,338 ballots on the county’s published outstanding-ballot list. The county also lists the number of timely postmarked mailed ballots arriving through November 10 as unknown, meaning the total outstanding workload can change.
Why the remaining ballots matter
Inyo’s fourth election-night summary, issued at 12:13 a.m. on November 4, recorded 4,239 participating voters out of 10,929 registered voters. The countywide snapshot is only an intermediate stage. The number of ballots still being processed is especially significant when some local contests are separated by a handful or a few dozen votes. An election-night lead is not a certified outcome.
What the next scheduled report will contain
The Inyo County Elections Office says it expects its next update on Friday, November 6, including mailed ballots received by Election Day. Postal ballots postmarked no later than November 3 can still arrive by November 10 and be considered for counting if valid. Provisional, conditional-registration and signature-challenged ballots also require separate checks.
What challenged ballots mean
A challenged mail ballot does not necessarily mean a fraudulent vote or a permanently rejected ballot. The county explains that a ballot envelope missing a signature or containing a signature that does not initially match may require the voter to complete a correction process. These ballots are set aside until the required review or correction is complete. Residents who receive an official notice should follow the directions rather than assume their vote has already been counted.
From Bishop to Lone Pine, each close local race deserves another look
In Bishop, school board and City Council candidates are awaiting further ballots. In Big Pine and Lone Pine, trustee elections and a local emergency-services tax remain subject to canvassing. In the race for the county’s District 3 supervisor seat, the reported order has already shifted between early election-night tallies and the fourth report. See California58’s previous reporting on the District 3 contest, Bishop elections and Lone Pine.
Reporting 100% of precincts is not the finish line
The first election-night report largely reflects early voting and previously processed mail ballots; the following reports add election-day ballots. The county emphasizes that ballots dropped at polling locations on Election Day need envelope-signature review before they can enter the count. Thus a precinct reporting indicator is not a reliable measure of whether all eligible ballots have been counted.
When results become final
California’s Secretary of State says county elections offices must complete final official results by December 3, with statewide certification on December 11. Until then, every Inyo County result discussed here is unofficial. California58 will distinguish fresh county releases from older snapshots rather than silently mix totals from different reporting times.
