INYO COUNTY, California — November 5, 2026. One of Inyo County’s closest statewide-officer vote comparisons is not between a Democrat and a Republican. It is the California insurance commissioner contest between Ben Allen and Jane Kim, both Democrats. The county’s fourth unofficial report has Allen at 1,539 votes (50.11%) and Kim at 1,532 (49.89%): just seven votes separate them in Inyo County’s counted ballots.
The statewide picture is different
At the statewide level, KQED’s Associated Press results tracker, updated at 6 p.m. on November 4, listed Jane Kim with 3,601,211 votes (52.1%) and Ben Allen with 3,302,761 (47.8%). These are different geographic totals and different reporting times. It would be misleading to add Inyo’s county votes separately to the statewide AP total or describe the seven-vote Inyo margin as the overall margin.
Why an insurance election affects the Eastern Sierra
California’s elected insurance commissioner regulates insurance companies and the state’s insurance market. Homeowners, small businesses and people seeking health or other insurance coverage have a direct stake in regulatory decisions. Rural and high-wildfire-risk communities across the state face distinct insurance access and affordability challenges. Those concerns make this race consequential even for places with small electorates.
Small margins, complex ballots
The county report includes 3,071 valid candidate votes in the race, alongside 1,163 undervotes and five overvotes. An undervote is not a vote for either candidate. A ballot may be counted for governor while recording no valid selection for insurance commissioner; candidates’ percentages therefore use the valid votes in this specific contest, not every ballot cast countywide.
What happens next
Inyo’s elections office has scheduled its next update for Friday, November 6. Outstanding valid mail, provisional and corrected-signature ballots are still being processed. Inyo’s county-level ranking may move even while statewide reporting shows another candidate ahead. Neither the county-level seven-vote margin nor a statewide lead is final certification.
