MALIBU, Los Angeles County — Coastal erosion near properties affected by the Palisades Fire has prompted Malibu to push for permanent stabilization of sections of Pacific Coast Highway.

Malibu says the loss of seawalls and changes along the burned beachfront have left several road-adjacent parcels vulnerable to surf and erosion. After surveying 320 beachfront parcels, the city reported in August that 23 were red-tagged as unsafe. Caltrans and utility partners have monitored the area and considered temporary measures such as K-rail, but officials have continued to seek longer-term work. The city has stressed that rainfall, high surf and strong tides can accelerate damage to coastal embankments and potentially affect utilities under or near PCH.

Safety and rebuilding implications

Residents and visitors should obey posted closures and keep away from red-tagged properties or unstable slopes. Property owners navigating rebuilding should contact the city’s rebuilding resources and follow Caltrans updates for any highway restrictions. A red tag does not mean every property or every stretch of highway is closed; conditions are site-specific.
