KINGS COUNTY, Calif. — Emergency preparation in Kings County involves more than firefighters and evacuation routes. A separate public-health coordination system helps local agencies organize medical resources when disasters strain clinics, hospitals or emergency responders.

The county’s medical coordination role

The Kings County Public Health Emergency Preparedness program explains that a Medical and Health Operational Area Coordinator, or MHOAC, helps coordinate medical and health resources during emergencies. The role includes identifying needs, requesting additional support and communicating with state and regional partners. The department says the medical and health coordination function is available 24 hours a day.

The county also participates in the Central California Healthcare Coalition alongside public-health departments from nearby counties and emergency medical services partners. The coalition focuses on exercises, training and improving plans for medical surges.

What residents should do

The existence of a coordination program does not replace individual preparation. Households should keep essential medicines, contact details, evacuation plans and information about important medical equipment accessible in case roads or power are disrupted. Patients should follow provider guidance for prescriptions and any special needs.

Medical or public-health professionals who wish to learn about participating in preparedness work can use the contact address listed by the county, KC.MHOAC@co.kings.ca.us.
