LOS ANGELES COUNTY — OCTOBER 18, 2026. Motorists traveling on State Route 91 through Gardena, Carson, Compton, Long Beach and Cerritos should prepare for scheduled nighttime lane and ramp restrictions from October 19 through the morning of October 24. Caltrans District 7 says the work is part of a highway sign rehabilitation effort that also includes curbs, gutters, sidewalks and related improvements.
Where the lane closures are planned
On the eastbound SR-91, Caltrans lists nighttime closures of up to three lanes between Vermont Avenue and I-710, between I-710 and I-605, and between I-605 and the Orange County line. Start times vary by segment: from 8 p.m., 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., generally concluding between 5 and 6 a.m. during the weekday work schedule.
Westbound SR-91 restrictions include sections from Atlantic Avenue to Vermont Avenue, I-605 to Atlantic Avenue, and the Orange County line to I-605. Some closures begin at 8 p.m. or 10 p.m., with others starting close to midnight. Friday-night work may extend into Saturday morning.
Interchanges that could interrupt your trip
Caltrans also warns that connectors can be fully closed during work hours. Movements on and off SR-91 involving I-110, I-710 and I-605 are among those listed in the official notice. Rolling full closures of particular connectors and ramps may occur as construction crews move. This does not mean the entire SR-91 corridor is planned to close completely throughout the period.
Daytime disruption at Main Street in Carson
The notice identifies Main Street off-ramp closures in Carson from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for paving, in addition to nighttime ramp restrictions. Drivers who primarily commute during daylight hours should not overlook this exception.
Other ramps named in the schedule include Alameda Street/Santa Fe Avenue, Long Beach Boulevard, Cherry Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, Central Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Downey Avenue, Avalon Boulevard and several others. Exact directions and times vary. Before taking a specific exit, consult the official Caltrans advisory and follow current road signs.
What Caltrans is repairing
The $34 million project covers approximately 14.7 miles of SR-91 in Los Angeles County. Planned work includes rehabilitation and replacement of roadside and overhead signs, improved lighting, restoration of highway planting, replacement of some guardrails and worker-safety improvements. The agency lists summer 2029 as the expected overall completion period, not a promise that every closure will last until then.
Practical impact for residents
Even travelers who never drive on SR-91 may notice additional traffic near ramps and temporary detour routes. Drivers making deliveries or coming off late shifts should allow extra time, especially around the major interchange connections. Nearby homes and businesses may hear construction noise and experience some vibration or dust.
Check for updates before you leave
Caltrans emphasizes that lane-closure times and locations are subject to change based on weather and operations. Check QuickMap before a trip and obey the posted detours. For another major closure in Los Angeles County, see California58’s I-405 Sepulveda Pass advisory.
