California58 Mission Trail · Mission 3 of 21 · Founded 1771 · Monterey County. California’s missions are historical places and, in many cases, active religious institutions. This independent guide separates the surviving site from the colonial history that created it.

Why Mission San Antonio de Padua matters

Founded July 14, 1771, San Antonio de Padua stands in a remote oak valley near Jolon and Fort Hunter Liggett. It differs sharply from urban missions: instead of a crowded downtown, the landscape helps visitors consider the isolation of a colonial agricultural and religious outpost.

Architecture and what survives

The mission was relocated in the 1770s to improve water access and developed an elaborate system of aqueducts and related infrastructure. The institution also became associated with early tile roofing and music instruction. These technologies should be interpreted in the context of Native labor and the adaptation of existing regional knowledge, not simply as evidence of missionary achievement.

Indigenous history and what visitors should remember

Much of the present historic appearance is linked to restoration after periods of decline. The countryside and remaining archaeological resources make this an unusually instructive site, but a visit should never disregard the histories and contemporary presence of Indigenous communities.

California’s mission network was a system of colonization and religious conversion, not an empty-land settlement story. Mission communities existed on Native homelands; policies controlling labor, movement, religion and family life brought lasting harm. A balanced visit includes living Indigenous perspectives as well as architecture and Catholic heritage. California State Parks describes forced labor, violence and disease as major parts of this history.

Visit Mission San Antonio de Padua

Historic location: 1 Mission Road, Jolon, CA 93928. City: Jolon. County: Monterey.

Do not assume this isolated mission has the same visiting schedule as a city museum. The mission’s own website currently warns that it is closed on some weekdays; verify opening times and any military-area access guidance before departure.

Open directions in Google Maps. Check current access, timed tours, ticket prices, worship restrictions, disability access, and events before setting out. Historic guidebook prices and schedules may be outdated.

Access to this remote mission: what the Army and mission say

The mission lies near Fort Hunter Liggett, but the U.S. Army says the historic site is accessible on Mission Road, a public-access road that requires no installation vetting. That distinction matters: visitors should not conclude that they need a military base pass to reach the mission by the designated road. Stay on public routes and follow any posted instructions.

Visitor information checked October 20, 2026: the mission’s own website says it is generally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, with changing holiday schedules. Posted entrance prices are $10 per adult, $5 for children and seniors, and $25 for a qualifying family. Because this remote site sometimes announces special closures and may have unreliable internet access, call ahead before making a long drive. These prices and hours are subject to change.
